Free Home University (Lecce, Italy) is a pedagogical and artistic experiment focused on generating new ways of sharing and creating knowledge by experiencing life in common. The name shows our desire to be a non-vertical, energy-liberating, insurgent environment (Free), within a protected and intimate space (Home), committed to creating a temporary autonomous community of learners (University).
A full immersion into a collective experience, getting deeper in the context and struggles of our local communities (in particular refugees, LGBTQI+, land activists who stand for the protections of the commons) as well as designing a coalitional approach in the definition and construction of the inquiry, are considered fundamental values in this open–ended, research-based, artist-led experiment in alternative education.
In Free Home University, the lines of inquiry and methods of study vary following the proposals, desires and perspectives of people participating in the project, shaped by different processes and practices.
FHU is created by curator Alessandra Pomarico and Shawn van Sluys of Musagetes, co-curated by artist Nikolay Oleynikov, and co-designed in collaboration with artists, activists, thinkers such as: Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri, Lu Cafausu (Emilio Fantin, Luigi Negro, Giancarlo Norese, Cesare Pietroiusti, Luigi Presicce), Adrian Paci, and Luigi Coppola (2014); Ultra-red + Pony Zion (2015), Dani D’Emilia of La Pocha Nostra, Coumba Tourè, WHW and Constructlab (2016); Clare Dolan of Bread and Puppet Theater, Claudia Signoretti of Teatro dell’ Oppresso Rome, Barbara Toma (2016); Fernando Garcia Dory + InLand and Casa delle Agriculture (2017), Silvia Federici together with The Feminist Research on Violence Platform, Chto Delat, Babi Badalov (2019) with the active participation of many fellows and visitors, from the many heres and nows.
