Let’s Live as We Were Already Free
David Graeber
It is with great sadness and yet pulsating militant joy that Free Home Univ will participate in the intergalactic memorial carnival to celebrate our dear comrade, David Graeber, lost too soon. The invitation to gather in David’s spirit coincides with the 44th birthday of our tovarish Nikolay Oleynikov, so we decided to celebrate them together.
Both David and Nikolay are famous for their unapologetic militant anti-capitalism and travesty/crossdressing/burlesque enthusiasm. In her beautiful invitation our dear friend and FHU’s fellow Nika Dubrovsky reminded us how much David, loved Venice, the city in which he died, and the tradition of the carnival, as a political space of radical democracy: ‘during the Carnival there were no blacks, no whites, no old, no young, no beautiful, no ugly, no poor, no rich. Everyone was a mask’ she writes.
We invite all our friends here in Lecce and Salento to join us for The Night of Toothful Hearts, in the form of a masked parade / listening walk \ learning brindisi session to mourn, commemorate and celebrate by marching together through three designated stations:
19-00
Station 1: City Cemetery, a place to gather and connect
19-45
Station 2: staircases of Ateneo Universityin Lecce, a place to reclaim our learnings
20-45
Station 3: Blue Beat Antifascist Bar, a place to celebrate our struggles
In each station there will be ceremonies, readings, spontaneous or prepared activities. Please bring something to share and above all dress up, disguise, bring a mask – we don’t mean the covid protection mask – our masks for this night shall be a political statement.
(We are preparing a workshop for making artistic masks to share at the event too)
Be prepared to read out loud your favorite quote from your favorite David’s book, or a poem, or sing a song, to live as if you were already free - David would say- and dance a dance of toothful hearts.
