S. Federici, G. Esteva, M. Fasheh

A conversation with Silvia Federici, Gustavo Esteva and Munir Fasheh curated by Alessandra Pomarico and Udi Mandel Butler.
May 31st at 12,00 pm (midday) EST time.
2 hours and some minutes
Dear friends (Versión en español abajo)
We hope you are well and safe, and that the many threads of conversations are supporting you in this Covid context, reinforcing the possibility of thinking/ doing/ feeling together as a community that we see growing and expanding. We are grateful to those who are nurturing these spaces of grounded friendship, those who are mobilizing, those who keep building mutual aid and solidarity initiatives, those who are keeping the struggle alive everywhere.
For our second conversation of the Learning with Covid series, we are fortunate to be joined by thinkers/activists Silvia Federici, Gustavo Esteva and Munir Fasheh, considered by many our leading teachers and elders, for their life-long engagement in feminist, decolonial, emancipatory struggles, their involvement in building spaces of autonomy and liberation, their tireless work of reclaiming and defending the commons against all forms of violence embedded in colonial, patriarchal, capitalist social structures and systems.
It will be a tremendous occasion to discuss with them what Boaventura de Sousa Santos recently called the “pedagogy of the virus”, to harvest from their experience of and participation in other historical struggles in different contexts, to understand together how we can learn with the virus, what we can do and with whom to respond to this catastrophe that they call pandemic.
After their intervention, we will open the floor for comments and questions to those present.
Please be with us and share the call with others!

A bit about our guests:
Gustavo Esteva is an independent writer and grassroots activist. Gustavo has been a central figure in a wide range of Mexican, Latin American, and international nongovernmental organizations and solidarity networks, including Universidad de la Tierra en Oaxaca, which he founded in 1999. In 1996, he was an advisor to the Zapatistas (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional) in their negotiations with the Mexican government. In 2006, he took part in the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO). Gustavo, a “de-professionalized intellectual” is well known for his contribution to post-development theory and practice, a strong advocate for active non-violence, and a proponent of radical pluralism and community-based initiatives, for the reorganization of the society from the bottom-up. A prolific writer, he is the author of more than 40 books, published in seven languages.
Silvia Federici is a feminist activist, political philospher, teacher and writer. Born in Italy, she moved very young to the States, and also lived for a long period in Africa and Latin America. In the 1970s, she was one of the founders of the International Campaign for Wages for Housework and the International Feminist Collective. She was also one of the founders of the Committee for Academic Freedom in Africa and of the Radical Philosophy Association (RPA) as wells as the Anti-Death Penalty Project. She is the author of books and essays on women’s history and feminist theory, political philosophy and education. Her published works include: Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation; Revolution at Point Zero; Witches, Witch-hunting and Women, and Re-enchanting the World: Feminism and the politics of the Commons. Silvia is Emerita Professor at Hofstra University.
Munir Fasheh I was born in Jerusalem in 1941 at the peak of British occupation. In 1948 I was driven with my family out of our home and have been refugees ever since. I studied math and physics and taught them for many years. The 1967 war had a drastic impact on me, both bad and good. The bad is obvious: bombardment by bombs. The good was it made me aware of the bombarded by words which acted as viruses that corrupted my mind. I started looking for ‘organic’ words in Arabic that can do the healing (just like wild plants in relation to the body). I was amazed how much we have. I started my journey on that path. Then I realized that my illiterate mother is a mathematician of a totally different world that was made invisible. That eventually led to see the reality that I was: proud to be a slave, and a knowledge colonialist with Euro-American math as my weapon. Since 1971, I have been involved in actions connected to learning away from teaching and pedagogy. I became much more involved in reading life than books. On the other hand I was increasingly convinced that the bigger the crisis, the simpler the solution. This is what I followed since 1971. Hope is connected to ideas which every person can contribute to.
